Noosa Outriggers get results at Maroochy River Paddle 2013

The Noosa Outrigger Canoe Club was proud to once again participate in the marathon 17km Maroochy River Paddle, held last Sunday 18 August.

The Maroochy River Paddle is a joint event presented by the Sunshine Coast Kayak Club and the Marcoola SLSC, to celebrate all paddle sports on the Sunshine Coast.

Participating paddle craft include outrigger canoes, dragon boats, surf skis, stand up paddle boards and a variety of kayaks and canoes.

Noosa Outrigger Canoe Club entered both OC1 (single) & OC2 (double) outriggers in the event, with outstanding OC1 efforts from John Goller (1:26:58) and Des Mabbott (1:29:56). Other notable performances were Martin Courtney (1:36:44), a great result for his first river race, and Harry Crockford (1:38:45) who competed in a close tussle with Martin throughout the race, while testing himself on his new OC1. Another notable first time OC1 result was achieved by Pip Kay (1:46:59), who will definitely be one to watch in future Women’s OC1 races.

The OC2 results included a fantastic time achieved by Wendy Mabbott & Rhonda Crockford (1:40:29), in their sleek looking new OC2 as they showed many of the other women competitors just how to paddle well.

The hard luck story of the day has to be the outcome for Gary Hanlon & Craig Harris competing on the club OC2. Racing together for the first time, they had covered just 100m before a rudder cable snapped, sending their boat in ever diminishing circles (much to the dismay of the other competitors!). As they philosophically stated, ‘There’s always next year!’

The NOCC competitors will aim to improve times and add to their great results at the upcoming OC1 & OC2 race event, to be hosted by Bundaberg OCC this Saturday 24 August 2013.

NOCC is pleased that teams are starting to register for its upcoming Corporate Day which takes place on the Noosa River on Sunday 22 September. To date registrations include two teams each from Jetts Gym, Debt Rescue and Rockcote, plus one team each from Global Journeys and Outrigger Little Hastings Resort.
